P&G Strives for Zero Manufacturing Waste From All Production Sites by 2020

Procter and Gamble (P&G) is yet another company pledging to reduce, reuse and recycle. According to the company, there have been additional investments in recycling and beneficial reuse that will aim to eliminate all manufacturing waste from over 100 of its production sites by 2020.

56% of P&G’s global production sites have already achieved this goal and plans are in place to reach 100% over the next four years. This goal includes eliminating or beneficially re-using 650,000 metric tons of waste that would typically be sent to the landfill.

P&G is ensuring that all incoming materials are either converted into finished products, recycled internally or externally, or reused in alternative ways through partner ships.

What P&G Has Been Doing So Far

1. In Lima, Ohio, Tide and Gain liquid waste has been converted to alternative fuel sources to power vehicles
2. In Mandideep and Baddi, India, plastic laminate materials, that are non-recyclable, have been shredded and pressed into budget-friendly building panels

Shailesh Jejurikar, executive sponsor for sustaina­bility and president of global fabric care, said, “We are accelerating progress toward our long term vision and pushing ourselves to do more – with less waste. Since 2010, we’ve been working toward a vision of sending zero manufacturing and consumer waste to landfills. This announcement marks another step on that journey.”
